AN ACTION PLAN

So, what can you actually do?  Think of the answer to this question in four parts, with Senior Citizens for America providing you with support at each step:

First: Become a member and/or start a group

  • Your participation is vital, and it will make a difference.
  • Be assured that multitudes of senior citizens support what you are doing. We will be there for you.
  • Don’t give in to frustration when the bad guys just keep on coming.
  • Remember that this is a long-distance race and you are running it for the benefit of your posterity.

Second: Oppose undemocratic conduct where you can, when you can, and how you can.

  • For starters, you can join an anti-authoritarian protest in your area. Or you can organize a protest of your own.
  • But there is a lot more that you can do. Check out the pages on this site entitled Issue and Kinds of Actions You Can Take.
  • Find an issue that you want to engage with and decide how you might do it. We are here to help you get started.
  • Whether you can do big things or – like most of us – smaller things, there are a lot of things you can do. You have more power than you think.

Third: On the positive side, strengthen the sinews of democracy.

  • Part of dealing with autocracy is encouraging good citizenship. There are lots of ways you can do this:
  • You can support the education of America’s children – our future citizens! – in multiple ways.
  • You can advance civic knowledge and awareness at every level of society.
  • You can exercise your right to vote and encourage others to do the same.

Fourth: Communicate

  • You are not alone in this contest.
  • By speaking up and speaking out, you will not only make your own contribution but also encourage others to do the same.
  • By letting us know what you are doing, we can find ways to help you, magnify your voice, and share your work with others.

MORE ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE

  • Log on to the website regularly for more information, events, chapter and independent members activities, and opportunities. The more it is used, the more people will be able to find it in their Google searches!
  • Arrange to meet your public official representatives. We will assist where possible.
  • Join in rallies. Many of you have already. We will work with Indivisible and others to bring out people who want to express their voices.
  • Strengthen the sinews of democracy. This includes promoting civic education and voting.
  • Weigh in on pending legislation. Advocate for forward-looking bills. And remember that even if terrible legislation passes, you can fight to win again on another day.
  • Follow the issuance of executive orders and public notices of administrative rule-making. Find ways to be heard.
  • Talk with friends; write letters to the editor.
  • Research the issues and join with friends in deciding what positions to take.
  • Elect a representative of your chapter – or volunteer to be a representative yourself – to participate in the monthly Zoom conversations that we will be holding to put out information and get your views on actions we can take as a whole movement.

Our members and chapters are each free to act on their own consistent with SCFA’s Mission (see ABOUT US).  At the same
time, we hope to act together on matters where there is a broad consensus. We believe that there is such a consensus on priorities for 2026, including changing the Congress, protecting the judiciary, supporting organizations litigating for our rights, providing civic education to our young adults and encouraging them to vote, and gathering 1,000,000 positive responses to the Promise to Future Generations.  Please click on the Contact Us button to discuss how you or your organization can participate in these efforts.

WHAT SCFA HAS DONE SO FAR

Even as our organizational work continues, we are analyzing a broad spectrum of issues. And we have begun to act on them. The early steps have been modest, but they are creating a pathway to more dynamic and impactful action. So far, we have:

  • Joined with Public Citizen in an ongoing effort to build support in Pennsylvania and elsewhere for an ultimate constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United, the Supreme Court decision that authorizes unlimited corporate and union funding in election campaigns.
  • Participated in rallies, along with millions of other Americans, to protest concentration of power in the presidency.
  • Protested efforts by the federal government to rewrite America’s history, believing that our great country can both be proud of itself and also recognize its failings where they exist.
  • Engaged with the property and casualty industry in its efforts to link rate increases to climate change.
  • Identified public officials who are not responsive to these and other concerns of the American people so that we can begin to hold them to account.
  • Opposed efforts to reject judges in retention elections on political grounds where they have served properly and with complete professionalism.
  • Collaborated with good government groups promoting civic education and voting.

This is only the beginning.
