ISSUES

There are many areas in which authoritarianism has taken hold. Here are just a few of the administration’s practices or policies that should cause concern.

  • Imposing federal troops upon American communities against the wishes of the elected leadership of those communities under the purported guise of “law and order” and thereby creating de facto military regimes in those communities.
  • Attempting to re-write the public record so as to remove “inconvenient” facts like racial discrimination from America’s history.
  • Pardoning the rioters who attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in order to prevent the transfer of power from the first Trump administration to a duly elected Biden administration.
  • Creating an “enemies list” and pursuing a campaign of retribution against those who have.
  • Engaging in self-dealing
  • Ignoring climate change to the detriment of life on earth
  • Defunding public radio and television and attacking independent news media and their personnel.
  • Limiting and/or completely cutting off the flow of governmental information upon which both businesses and ordinary citizens rely.
  • Hollowing out the senior ranks of the military and replacing them with more compliant officers, thereby creating a risk that the military would act in accordance with the President’s personal wishes and contrary to the mandate of the Constitution.
  • Attempting to rig the 2026 elections by directing certain states to create new voting districts and to outlaw mail-in ballots, all with the intention of yielding more members of the President’s party in the next Congress, while effectively diluting the voting power of other constituencies.
  • Enacting abusive and unfair legislation, such as the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill that effectively transfers massive amounts of wealth to highly paid persons at the expense of the poor.
  • Turning the Justice Department into an instrument of the President’s vengeance.
  • Removing the duly appointed leadership of agencies created by the Congress and purporting to impound monies whose expenditure it duly enacted, all in violation of the prerogatives of the Article One branch of government.
  • Threatening federal judges, who are members of the Article Three branch of government, with unlawful removal and causing them to be harassed when, following the law, they rule against the President’s program.
  • Defunding America’s great research universities, purportedly because they failed to take sufficient action against antisemitic demonstrators but essentially because the faculties and student bodies of those universities are perceived as being opposed to the administration’s program, all to the detriment of higher education, scientific research, and the future welfare of the country.
  • Intimidating many of the largest and most highly respected law firms and causing them to accept uncompensated assignments from the President.
  • Arbitrarily investigating and threatening to prosecute the President’s enemies.

As sweeping as this list is, it is hardly exhaustive. There is plenty of room for you to find your own area of concern. The touchstone is simple. Does it threaten our freedoms, democratic norms, and/or the Constitution of the United States? If so, please let us know what it is.
